What To Consider When Buying A Small Portable Projector?
What To Consider When Buying A Small Portable Projector?
Using a projector is a great way to view content on a big screen whether for business presentations, outdoor movie nights, or gaming. While full-size projectors can be bulky and heavy, small and portable projectors make it easy to project a big image anywhere. What to consider when buying a small portable projector Brightness – Measured in lumens, needed based on room lighting. Choose a projector with higher lumens if you’ll use it in a room with lots of ambient light. Resolution – Minimum of 720p HD, up to 1080p Full HD. Higher resolution like 1080p provides sharper image quality, but 720p is adequate for most. Contrast ratio – Higher ratio gives sharper image. Look for a contrast ratio of at least 10,000:1 for deep blacks and vivid colors. Connectivity – HDMI, USB, Bluetooth, WiFi for device pairing. Multiple options like HDMI, USB, and wireless provide flexible device connectivity. Built-in speaker – Convenient but may lack robust sound. Opt for a model with built-in speaker for portability, but consider connecting an external speaker for better audio. Different Types of Small Portable Projectors There are three main projector technologies to choose from: LED – Uses LEDs as the light source. Lower brightness but provides rich colors. Best for small rooms or dark environments. Most portable and affordable option. Laser – Utilizes lasers for lighting. Offers very high brightness and contrast. Excellent for well-lit rooms. High upfront cost but with lower maintenance. DLP – Employs tiny mirrors and a color wheel. Brightness depends on lamp wattage. Middle ground price-wise. Provides very sharp image quality.

TV vs. Projector: Choose the Best Display for You in 2024
TV vs. Projector: Choose the Best Display for You in 2024
Prices of big TVs continue to fall, but the largest screen sizes still offer a poor value. Not even the biggest TV models can produce an image as large as what's possible with an inexpensive projector. Modern projectors are brighter than ever, and models around $100 have great picture quality.   Anything you'd watch on a TV, including movies, games and bingeable TV shows, you can watch on a projector instead. Actors on screen can be life-size, or even more, for a theater experience at home. I've used a projector as my main "TV" for over 20 years, and I'd never be able to go back to a "tiny" TV regardless of its size. Though projectors require a little more setup than a TV, it's usually not enough that you'd need to hire a professional.   There are a few more points to think about in regard to getting a projector -- both for and against. Let's have a look.   Compare: Price vs. performance   A lot has changed in the last decade or so when it comes to price and performance between projectors and TVs. TVs have improved at an incredible rate, while getting larger and cheaper. Projectors, not so much. OLED TVs offer far better image quality than any projector, and can be had in fairly large sizes. That's not the whole story, however.   Though the price of big TVs has fallen sharply, and their performance has increased significantly, most people can't afford a 100-plus-inch screen unless it's from a projector. Sure, TVs have gotten bigger, but not that big. At least not yet. You're trading size for performance. Price, however, isn't as clear cut. A good projector is around the same price as a decent 75-inch TV. So if you want to spend around $100 for a "big screen," there are several options for large displays.   Contrast: TVs win for HDR   HDR, or high dynamic range, is an issue for projectors. While many projectors can accept HDR video, almost all have difficulty displaying HDR video. The problem is twofold. The first is that even the best home projectors aren't that bright, at least compared with the average television. The second is that the more affordable projectors also don't have the contrast ratio needed to show HDR at its best. Many models aren't able to display wide color gamut at all.   Now, higher-end projectors can do wide color gamut and do an OK job with HDR, but at a far greater price than a large TV. Even the best and brightest projectors still boast only a fraction of the brightness of a midrange television. Brightness isn't everything (though arguably, contrast ratio is), but when it comes to HDR, light output is a much bigger deal. Some new projectors are using LEDs or lasers as their light source, and they can often do far better in terms of color and overall brightness, but contrast ratios are still far too low for reasonable HDR. Can a projector look good without HDR? Yes, but this is another piece missing in the projector puzzle.   A little thing called light   Forget 4K and HDR -- the biggest image-quality issue with projectors is much more practical: ambient light. A projector throws light at a screen, but any other light in the room is also getting thrown at the screen. The brightest parts of the image aren't hugely affected, but the darker parts are. Which is to say, if you're watching sports or something that's bright overall, you're fine. If you're watching a dark movie or playing a dark video game, the image is going to be hard to see. Yes, there are ambient light-rejecting screens, but they're expensive. And physics is physics. No matter how good a fancy screen is at reducing the impact of ambient light, that same screen is still going to look worse in the day than in a dark room. If you want to watch your projector in a room with lots of windows (like the one shown at the top of this article) and enjoy the best image quality, you'll need lots of curtains. A TV is going to create a much brighter image than any projector, one that holds up better in bright rooms. This obviously hasn't persuaded me to switch to a TV, but full disclosure: I use blackout curtains in my TV room. Most people probably aren't willing to make that sacrifice.

Projector Technology Principles
Projector Technology Principles
A projector is an electronic device that can project images or videos onto a screen or other flat surface. It is commonly used in meetings, presentations, entertainment and other occasions. They work based on different technical principles, including LCD, DLP (Digital Light Processing) and LCoS (Liquid Crystal Reflective Array), etc.   LCD projectors use an LCD panel and a light source to generate images. When a light source passes through the LCD panel, the molecules of the liquid crystal are arranged according to the input electrical signal, thereby controlling the degree of light transmission and forming an image. These images are projected onto a screen through lenses.   DLP projectors use tiny micro-mirrors to reflect light, with each lens representing a pixel of the image. These lenses, controlled by input signals, can adjust the direction of light reflection to create an image. DLP projectors usually have a rotating color filter wheel that produces a color image.   LCoS projectors combine liquid crystal and reflective technology. It uses an LCD panel to adjust the degree of light transmission and reflects the light onto a reflective surface. There are millions of tiny reflectors on the reflective surface, each representing a pixel. These reflectors can adjust the angle of light, creating an image. Regardless of the technology, projectors require a light source to provide light energy. Common light sources include incandescent lamps,   LEDs and lasers. Incandescent lights are inexpensive but have a shorter lifespan, while LEDs and lasers are more energy efficient and have a longer lifespan.   In general, projector technology principles are based on the principles of optics and electronics, and generate images by controlling the propagation and reflection of light. Different types of projectors have their own technical details, advantages and disadvantages, and choosing the right one depends on specific application needs and budget considerations.

What’s In Store For Smart Homes In 2024?
What’s In Store For Smart Homes In 2024?
Smart Home technology has made rapid advancements in the past 12 months, and 2024 promises to accelerate this trend. For example, the new Matter specification, which makes it possible for devices from different manufacturers to connect securely and effortlessly, has expanded quickly over the past year, with companies moving quickly to develop and introduce products that are either already Matter-certified or about to be. At the same time, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have become prominent features in many Smart Home devices, combining with the latest wireless, imaging, and audio technologies to create autonomous devices that can learn from our patterns and preferences, and deliver a better and more customized experience. 2024 Smart Home Forecast As we enter 2024, it’s never been easier to set up, protect, expand, and maintain a home network. That means everyone – not just the tech experts – can enjoy the advantages of a secure, connected home environment. What’s more, because AI lets us delegate more tasks to the home itself, we can spend less time configuring, controlling, and monitoring our environment. Additionally, voice control, voice recognition, and natural language processing all benefit from AI. In 2024, devices will do a better job of understanding what you say, not just by being better at identifying individual accents and speech patterns, but also by understanding context, intent, and the nuances of word choice and phrasing. This will make interactions with these devices feel more natural. Advances in facial recognition and motion detection will also make smart locks even smarter, with the ability to identify you as you approach your front door or sense your direction of movement, so doors automatically lock and unlock according to who you are and what you’re doing. Adding a camera, and the AI-driven ability to interpret images or video, makes appliances more helpful and increases safety. A refrigerator with interior cameras can order replacements when supplies run low, or alert you when time is running out for perishable items. Similarly, a range hood equipped with cameras and air-quality sensors can adjust fan settings when you’re boiling a pot of pasta, or issue an alarm if the pot boils dry and begins to burn or a toddler is dangerously close to a hot burner. 2024 will also see smart devices become more efficient. Smart sensors and learning algorithms make it possible to manage energy consumption more precisely. Similarly, smart thermostats can analyze our environments, learn from our actions and preferences, and adjust energy consumption accordingly. Your home can even check the weather and make changes based on the upcoming forecast. A More Innovative Home All of these trends are evidence that the Smart Home is making an evolutionary step. In the years ahead, as technology continues to advance, Smart Homes will move beyond the relatively simple capabilities we’ve come to expect, like turning on and off lights or using a smartphone app to control the thermostat. What lies ahead is truly intelligent living, with our homes becoming fully integrated environments that can securely and autonomously orchestrate the entire living space.

Choosing Projector Brightness And Lumens Is Important
Choosing Projector Brightness And Lumens Is Important
Knowing About Throw Distance and Ambient Lighting Typically expressed in lumens or ANSI lumens, the brightness specification is an important reference point when selecting a projector. However, the practical meaning of projector brightness and how to choose a projector for your specific installation needs can be confusing. The following information will help you understand the relationship between brightness and projection outcomes, as well as the application of brightness in projector technology.   To illustrate this idea clearly, let’s compare projection brightness to the lumen ratings of automobile headlights and consider the viewing effect in different ambient lighting situations.   When a car is in dark environments, you can observe its luminous intensity immediately when you turn on the headlights. On the other hand, when it is midday with strong sunlight, it’s very hard to perceive headlight brightness even when high beams on the highest lumen output are used. The same relationship exists between projector brightness and ambient lighting.   If you need ambient lighting when using the projector, then a model with higher lumens will produce better results.   If you plan to watch movies using a projector on a 100”~120” screen without ambient lighting, around 1500~2000 lumens of projection brightness is ideal. If you need to turn on ambient lighting or if there are bright light sources in the room, a projector with 3,000 lumens or more will display clear images. What About Brightness for Outdoors Projectors?   Good outdoor projectors, such as the T9 deliver 500 lumens, which projects great images in low light conditions and reasonably good images in well-lit indoor scenarios (also depends on image size). For outdoors usage, make sure you get a portable projector with 500 lumens to enjoy movies under the star without worries about the power supply or the mobility of the projector. Do High Lumens Equal Excellent Viewing Quality?   Based on the information above, you may wonder if a model with higher brightness can be applied to various projection sizes and ambient lighting requirements while guaranteeing clear images with excellent color. For home theater systems, we recommend that consumers choose a projector with appropriate brightness to show the clearest images with the best color performance and contrast ratio effect.     The light processing components of a projector consist of the projection lamp, which determines the highest brightness output and color wheel, controls the color performance. Theoretically, a higher wattage lamp can produce a brighter image while the color wheel’s RGB purity must be controlled to reproduce colors accurately. Light transmission and brightness, will be compromised when it is necessary to meet pure color requirements. So instead of pursuing high lumens, projection brightness must be controlled within an appropriate range to increase color accuracy.                     Determine the Ideal Projector Brightness for Your Need Determine the Ideal Projector Brightness for Your Needs Determine the Ideal Projector Brightness for Your Needs When selecting a projector, there are many specifications to consider. Among them, one of the most critical specifications is brightness. With appropriate lumens for the throw distance and ambient lighting, the projector can produce spectacularly clear images with true colors. This is particularly crucial for consumers choosing home theater systems. Before selecting a projector, you first need to determine the distance between the projector and screen, the expected picture size, and whether you’ll need lights turned on when watching movies. These criteria are very helpful when choosing projectors, so you can ensure the most enjoyable viewing experience for your family with the ideal home theater system.

What Is A Smart Lock And How Does It Work
What Is A Smart Lock And How Does It Work
A smart lock is a device that uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity to lock or unlock a door without the need for a traditional key. What is smart-lock technology, and how does a smart lock work? These devices come in several different styles. All provide keyless entry, usually through a keypad, fingerprint, or remote fob, so for those whose hands are often full when returning home, smart locks provide a great convenience. The lock itself connects to the home’s Wi-Fi network so that it can be accessed via a smartphone app or a control panel within the home, and it connects to both phones and key fobs via Bluetooth. When the app sends a command to lock or unlock the door, the smart lock responds by doing so and confirms the action. The same happens when a user manually punches in a code on the keypad or waves the fob or digital key in front of the lock, depending on the style of the lock itself. A basic smart lock can fit over an existing lock with only a few modifications needed. If it’s time to replace the existing locks on the doors, smart locks can be purchased as stand-alone devices to install in the same way as any other type of door lock. A quick setup to connect it to the home’s Wi-Fi network renders it ready to go. However, for residents who are comfortable with the security provided by their current deadbolts, the convenience of a smart lock is still available: Several companies manufacture smart locks that install over the top of existing locksets. These components also work via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but their construction encompasses the existing lock levers, and they deploy a mechanism that physically flips the lock when given the appropriate command. No need to replace the entire lockset—just choose a smart lock that is the correct size to work with the existing lock and install. With permission from the landlord, renters can install them over existing locks with just a few screws to enjoy the same benefits as homeowners and integrate the smart lock into one of the best apartment security systems. Smart locks can usually be accessed via a mobile app to allow remote door locking and unlocking. While smart locks provide quite a few security benefits, one of the most useful features is the ability to control the lock from a mobile app. In addition to providing peace of mind by allowing residents to check from afar that the door is locked, this feature also permits users to unlock a door without sharing keys or keypad codes to let in a repairman, babysitter, or a kind neighbor who has picked up a package from the front step. Many smart locks also offer door locking and unlocking using codes, fingerprint scans, or digital keys. Most smart locks have a lever on the interior side of the lock that can be physically turned to manually lock and unlock the door. But one primary benefit of the smart lock is keyless entry. Smart-lock technology is still evolving, so different methods of keyless entry can be found in different lock styles, and each has its benefits and drawbacks. Some systems are unlocked using a code typed into a keypad on the lock face. This method permits users to change the code as often as they choose. It can also allow for temporary or short-term codes with limited access periods, so if a housecleaning service needs to get in every Wednesday at 1 p.m., the user can set a unique code for the housecleaners that only works between 1 and 3 p.m. on Wednesdays. This way, trusted people can have access to the home when necessary, but there aren’t extra keys floating around. The homeowner can feel secure that their home can’t be accessed without permission at other times. Keypads also mean the codes can be changed frequently, which can make the home more secure. Other smart locks use fingerprint-scan technology to allow access to the home. Similar to keypad entry, the fingerprint sensor can record a number of different fingerprints, and the user can set rules, limits, or conditions on when each print will unlock the door. Some concerns have been raised in the past about the sensitivity and longevity of fingerprint sensors, but as technology has improved, they have become quite reliable. Digital keys can take several forms. The most common digital key is the smartphone that is paired with the lock or connected through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Anyone approaching the door with a paired phone in their pocket or bag will automatically trigger the lock to open. Alternatively, a digital key can be a paired key fob that communicates with the lock and opens it once the fob is in close proximity to the door. Sensitivity varies with each device. While some may have signals that are strong enough to connect from inside a bag or deep pocket, others may need to be held up to the lock to function. But either way, digital keys are easier than fumbling in the dark to get the correct key into the lock on a rainy night. Residents may worry that a power or Wi-Fi outage will lock them out of the house, but that’s not a concern with a smart lock. First, Bluetooth connectivity will still function even when the home has no power or the Wi-Fi is down. Second, most smart locks also have a standard key slot as backup. As smart-lock technology continues to be a focus of research and development, manufacturers will continue to advance the backup systems to protect against lockouts. A smart lock can monitor who enters and leaves the home to identify potential intruders. What’s a smart lock going to do to make a home more secure? Keypad locks with specifically assigned codes will track who enters and leaves the home and when they came and went. Most often, the mobile app will notify the homeowner that someone has opened the lock, and the notification will identify the user based on the code that has been entered. The app will also record attempts to open the door and the code that was used, so if someone with a limited-time code tries to enter at an unauthorized time, the homeowner will be aware. When paired with a doorbell camera, smart locks add even more security. The doorbell will sense the movement at the front entry and trigger video recording (and alert the homeowner to activity). If an unauthorized visitor attempts to enter a code or use a device to try to bypass the smart lock, the combination of the secure smart lock and the video recording will preserve important evidence to present to law enforcement. As most video doorbells also have communication functions, this combination can also allow the homeowner to interact with the visitor and instruct them to leave. Smart locks often have auto-locking capabilities that lock the door after a set period of time or when the owner leaves the home’s proximity. Everyone has, at one time or another, forgotten to lock the door in the rush to get out of the house. However, many people with doors that lock automatically have also made a desperate dive to catch the door before it clicks shut when they realize their keys are on the table inside, not in their hand. Smart locks can alleviate both problems. Auto-locking functions on most smart locks can be customized to fasten the lock after the door has been closed for a certain period of time, so if the user forgets to set the lock, the home will be secured. Similarly, some smart locks sense when the paired fob or phone has left a preset proximity and will automatically lock the door at that time. One of the most important steps residents can take to secure their homes is to lock the door every time they leave the house, so smart locks with this feature truly increase the security of the home and protect residents from unintentionally leaving their home vulnerable to intruders. Because the system can be set to wait for a short interval or to sense that the user has left the area before triggering the lock, users are less likely to accidentally be locked out while grabbing the mail or getting a package off the step. A smart lock can be integrated into a connected smart-home system to further increase home security. Smart locks can be stand-alone products. Pairing them with a video doorbell gives users much more information about who is using the lock and when. Most smart locks, however, can be integrated into a full smart-home system, which adds convenience and security to the front door area and the whole home. For example, users can set the smart-home system to respond when the smart lock is triggered, so when the resident approaches the front door at night and their fob unlocks the door, lights can turn on outdoors and throughout the house, music can switch on, and the HVAC system can adjust to the settings used when people are at home. The smart-home system can also be paired with the best home security systems and programmed to notify law enforcement or the home security company if someone tries to tamper with the lock. What are smart locks’ potential downsides? Many people have expressed concerns that smart locks are hackable, or that they might be breached and allow someone to break into the home’s Wi-Fi and access and control the lock. If residents are using best practices to secure their Wi-Fi, including complex passwords that can’t easily be guessed and appropriate firewalls and privacy settings, this kind of tampering isn’t likely. Those who have a smart-home system in place alongside their smart lock are likely to stay on top of these security practices, and may have a more elaborate network security plan in place to protect their various smart-home devices from hackers. As more and more devices become part of automated smart-home processes, this kind of security will be even more critical. Realistically, though, for smart-lock users who are careful about Wi-Fi security, the chance of a hacker making it through the web of passwords and firewalls is much lower than the likelihood that an intruder will find the old-fashioned spare key under a flowerpot.

Some Context On Projector Brightness
Some Context On Projector Brightness
TVs vs. projectors: the difference between illuminance and luminance If you have no idea how to compare a projector's brightness output to a TV or any other emissive display, fret not; we were in the same boat when we started developing our projector test bench. What's a lumen anyway, and more importantly, how many nits (cd/m²) is it? The answer is a little frustrating. You can't directly convert ANSI lumens to nits since they measure two completely different things: illuminance and luminance. A TV's brightness is measured in luminance (nits or cd/m²) because you're looking at the light source itself, which is constrained within a fixed area. Manufacturers don't use luminance for a projector, with good reason: it's a meaningless metric without context. We can measure luminance by taking a reading of the image being displayed on the projection screen, but its value will only be representative of the testing environment and equipment used. The figure to the right shows the difference between luminance and illuminance.     ANSI lumens The main driving factor behind the purchase of a projector over a TV is their ability to display content in larger sizes. A projector delivering a high amount of lumens is key to doing so. There's no way around it for projectors: the larger the image you display, the lower the screen brightness (luminance) since the light source is fixed no matter how small or large you make the image. It's one of the reasons that manufacturers don't rate their projectors' brightness output in terms of luminance but rather illuminance—the amount of light that falls on a surface per unit area. The most widely used units are ANSI lumens, the standard unit for measuring light output from projectors as specified by the ANSI standard IT7.228-1997. Testing and calculating ANSI lumens is a straightforward process, allowing for a quick and efficient comparison of projectors in brightness. To calculate ANSI lumens, one needs to use an illuminance meter, take measurements in nine predefined areas, average them, and multiply them by the screen area; it's as simple as that! The picture below demonstrates how ANSI lumens are measured: A word of caution: it's essential to remain vigilant when a projector has its brightness quoted in lux or "LED lumens," as these values are essentially meaningless. They do not indicate how much light is projected from the lens but rather how much light is emitted at the source inside the projector before all the internal losses occur.   But wait, can ANSI lumens be converted to nits? How do lumens translate to brightness? Simply put, there's no definitive answer without context, as the luminance in nits will be relative to the projected image size and the projection surface. It's possible to get reference values as long as the projectors are tested in the same setup, which is, fortunately, exactly what we do! For example, our Epson Home Cinema 3800 delivers ~2300 ANSI lumens of light once calibrated. In our test environment, it gets insanely bright over a 55" projection size (~860 nits), and we still measured a solid 260 nits when projecting a 100" image. On a side note, while one could argue that 260 cd/m² is not as bright as most TVs, it's plenty bright for a projector, especially considering the impact of having such a large surface area with that brightness level. Here's our rule-of-thumb guide about how many ANSI lumens we recommend to get an acceptable picture quality for different projection sizes and viewing environments: ANSI lumen output Dark viewing environments Brighter viewing environments 2000 Large image sizes (100"+) Large image sizes (100"+)
